EPS vs SVG: which logo file should you use?

EPS vs SVG: which logo file should you use?
Short answer

Both EPS and SVG are vector formats, but they are made for different jobs. Use SVG on websites and apps, because browsers display it natively and it stays sharp and small. Use EPS, or a vector PDF, when a printer, sign maker or embroidery shop asks for a print file.

EPS and SVG are both vector formats, so they both scale without losing quality. The difference is where they work. Here is the short version and when to use each.

When to use SVG

  • Your website header and footer logo
  • Icons and simple illustrations on the web
  • Logos that need to animate or change color with CSS

When to use EPS

  • A printer, sign maker or embroidery shop asks for it
  • You send artwork to someone using older design software
  • Promotional products and merch suppliers

Yes. Open the EPS in Illustrator or Inkscape and export as SVG. Check the result in a browser: complex effects or embedded raster images may not convert cleanly.
