How long does it take to build a website?
Short answer

A landing page usually takes 1 to 2 weeks, a small business website 3 to 6 weeks and an online store 4 to 10 weeks. The biggest factor is not the build itself but how quickly content, feedback and approvals arrive.

Clients always ask how long their website will take. The honest answer depends on the size of the site and on how fast decisions get made. Here are the timelines we see on real projects.

Typical website timelines

Type of siteTypical timeline
Landing page1 to 2 weeks
Small business site (5 to 8 pages)3 to 6 weeks
Site with blog or CMS4 to 8 weeks
Online store4 to 10 weeks
Large custom site or redesign2 to 4 months

These are typical ranges for a custom design and build, not template setups.

The phases of a website project

  1. Brief and planning: pages, goals, examples (a few days).
  2. Design: homepage first, then inner pages, with revisions (1 to 3 weeks).
  3. Development: responsive build, CMS and integrations (1 to 4 weeks).
  4. Content and review: copy, images and final feedback.
  5. Launch: domain, redirects, SEO setup and testing.

What slows a project down

  • Missing copy and images. This is the most common delay by far.
  • Slow feedback rounds or too many people giving feedback.
  • New pages or features added in the middle of the project.
  • Waiting for access to the domain, hosting or old website.
From the studio: projects where the client sends all copy and images before design starts are often finished in half the time.

How to launch faster

  • Write a clear brief with a page list. Our design brief guide helps.
  • Prepare content early.
  • Pick one person to approve designs.
  • Launch the core pages first and add the rest later.

FAQ

Usually 3 to 6 weeks for a custom design and build of 5 to 8 pages.

About 1 to 2 weeks, depending on content and revisions.

Missing content and slow feedback, much more than the design or development work itself.

A single landing page can be. A full custom site usually cannot without cutting design or testing.
