Webflow vs Shopify: which one should you use?

Webflow vs Shopify: which one should you use?
Short answer

Choose Shopify when selling products is the main goal: it has the strongest checkout, inventory, apps and payment options. Choose Webflow for marketing sites, content and brand-led design, with simple ecommerce for small catalogs. Some brands use both: Webflow for the site, Shopify for the store.

Webflow and Shopify are both hosted platforms, but they start from opposite ends. Webflow is a website builder with ecommerce added. Shopify is an ecommerce platform with a website around it.

When Webflow is the better choice

  • The website is mainly for marketing, content or lead generation.
  • You sell a small number of products or digital items.
  • Custom design and animation matter more than ecommerce features.

When Shopify is the better choice

  • Products are the business and you plan to grow the catalog.
  • You need subscriptions, multiple currencies, marketplaces or POS.
  • You want the widest choice of payment methods and apps.

Using both

Some brands run the marketing site and blog in Webflow and the store in Shopify, linking product buttons to Shopify or using a headless setup. It adds complexity, so it only makes sense for brands that need both strong content and strong commerce.

From the studio: if you are unsure, ask what share of revenue comes from online sales. If it is most of it, start with Shopify.
